Above is a link to a Time magazine article about what to say to friends and family members who are dying. It's by hospice workers and a very good read, I think.

Amazing article, thanks for sharing! I have memories of my mother’s friends of many years scattering away quickly, not knowing what to do or say. One told me her presence probably made my mom sad. Ridiculous! I suggested she just sit and hold mom’s hand for a bit, but that was way past her comfort level. I wish people understood how much their presence is valued, far more than any words

An excellent article, thank you!

In the book of Job, when he had lost everything Job's friends showed up and for 7 days said nothing -- they were just there with him, being silently supportive, grieving with him. Sometimes if a person is worried they might say the "wrong" thing it is better to just say nothing. Once Job's friends started talking they said stupid and unhelpful things. When in doubt, say nothing -- just hold their hand, hug and cry with their family.

Showing up and saying nothing is far better than not showing up at all. It means so much for the dying and their grieving family. Dying and death is already a lonely enough road even when people do show up.
