What is non-medical in-home care
Non-medical in-home care (sometimes called companion care, homemaker services, personal‐care at home) helps individuals stay at home and maintain independence, without providing nursing or clinical medical services. Typical services include:
Assistance with mobility, dressing, bathing, grooming (as permitted)
Meal planning and preparation
Light housekeeping, laundry, errands, shopping
Transportation to appointments or social outings
Companionship, socialization and help with maintaining routines
Medication reminders (but not administering injections or other skilled nursing)
As one agency on Long Island describes:
“Personal independence is important at any age … With a little extra hand of a trained in-home caregiver, older adults can enjoy their day-to-day activities safely and confidently.”

This kind of care is often more affordable and less intensive than nursing services, and it helps people “age in place” in the comfort of their own home rather than moving into a facility.
