Why FirstLight Home Care of Buffalo was Founded

Perry Ciambella, owner, was living with and helping care for both of his parents. He learned that in the US, more people now take time off from work to care for parents than for children. He found that Caregivers often don’t know where to turn and get burdened with that cloud of uncertainty about how long and whether they can handle care. At least three things contribute to that uncertainty:

1. When caring for parents one must plan for giving increasing amounts of time as opposed to when caring for children one can count on increasing independence. Most caregivers are happy to sacrifice for their parents/spouses because they properly love and honor them. However, they are torn because their lives are busy with careers, caring for others, and other commitments that do not recede, as care needs increase.

2. Besides, the health care situation in this country threatens the weak and infirm. Hospitals are often pressured to release or not admit patients who just a few years ago could be well cared for there. Moreover, even those admitted to facilities of all sorts often find understaffing so that one needs a constant advocate to speak up for the needs of the sick. All this puts a greater burden on caregivers, when they are already busier than ever.

3. Perhaps the area of greatest concern is how to cost effectively get help. Everyone has heard of, or experienced firsthand someone who has turned over a significant amount of wealth to a skilled nursing facility, assisted living center or the like.
