Both home care and home healthcare have the same goal: to keep your loved ones safe and as healthy as possible. Often, they work in tandem. A home healthcare nurse or physician’s assistant will visit your home and potentially adjust your prescriptions, while a non-medical caregiver will make sure these medications are taken on time. A physical or occupational therapist may design an exercise plan for you; a non-medical caregiver will help you with these exercises throughout the day. Our quality home healthcare services are usually prescribed by a physician when you need skilled care in your home. Both services require specific licensing and both assist with activities of daily living (ADL).
As far as costs, home healthcare is usually paid by Medicare, Medigap, Managed Care, Medicaid, Veterans Benefits and private pay. Home care clients are generally private pay, although Medigap, Long Term Care Insurance (LCTI) and veteran’s benefits are available as well. Some health insurance plans offer limited respite care coverage. Home healthcare services are usually temporary (generally a short period of time) and with limited frequency (one to two hours per week), whereas non-medical home care can go on indefinitely.

FirstLight has provided home healthcare/companionship for the last five years. Most recently my Mom is living with my sister and for two hours, four days a week she has her “own” life. Her own plans to go get her hair done, taking her shopping, go have coffee and donuts. And my sister welcomes the weekly visits of Gloria and Pat. Not being able to drive has been hardest on her, but she has her own friends to do her own things. Renee is very understanding and been the answer to our problem of how to give my Mom freedom to have her own life.

FirstLight responded immediately to my request to provide home care for my father. The next day we participated in an in-depth interview with one of the directors and we described how much care we were looking for, what kind of care we needed, and my father's goals while still living on his own. The next day, a well-qualified home care provider came over and quickly put my father at ease with her willingness to help him move around, take him to appointments, prepare breakfast and/or lunch, and do light cleaning around the house. After a few weeks, the first caregiver had to move on, and a second caregiver came over who was even better than the first! In the months that my father had home care from FirstLight, the service was always professional and helpful. FirstLight managers always responded to phone calls and emails, usually within a couple of hours. I highly recommend FirstLight to anyone looking for home care, whether for just a few weeks or for an extended period of time.

My mom’s dog is her best friend, and FirstLight HomeCare of Woodbridge was able to find a caregiver that likes dogs and is not scared of my mom’s dog. The caregiver shows compassion by asking my mom how she is doing and making sure she is doing her exercises. FirstLight is personable and they care about the clients, they work to match a caregiver to the client. The service has given me time to work and they give me a break from 24 hour care.
