My husband has been suffering from dementia and multiple myeloma and gradually losing ADL and other functions. Two weeks ago he fell and had a brain bleed and compressed vertebrae, After several days in the hospital he was moved to rehab and has made a lot of progress but he will never return to the level of ability that would allow us to continue to care for him at home. We had been looking at local memory care facilities and now have been advised by palliative care at the hospital and oncology doctor that we should be seriously considering Hospice. He can stay in rehab for a few more days and we have found a memory care facility that we like. Our question is; do we keep him in rehab past the medicare limit to allow for x-rays and a CT scan to check on the residual damage or do we go straight into Hospice?
I think you need to have a discussion with his medical team to ask the question, "What advantage will having extra information about residual damage provide?" If they can't tell you, or it really won't benefit him, then there's no point in doing it.
I'm sorry you have to endure these circumstances.
