Another thought here too. I think in a weird way in many elder's minds getting help from family with tasks of independent living doesn't "count". If a daughter comes to clean it is because she's just being helpful, out of love, not because the elder can't do it and the house is sliding into a pit of filth. Once they have to hire someone and pay them it brings it home that they really do have new limitations. And there's the fear of strangers in the mix as well.
