In my case, my mother has some hearing loss and is caring for my father, who has dementia. I've noticed that my father can hear remarkably well even though he doesn't always comprehend. I've wondered too if my mother might be developing dementia as well. Not only from not being able to hear as well but also from caring for someone with dementia. I've read that either one of those situations can lead to dementia. Thank you for all your comments and helpful suggestions on this forum! I truly don't know what I would have done without it.

My Luz had the aphasia and would not answer me for or over a year. She might say a word or two on her own but that was rare.
She might greet you but that would be the end of it. Her attention immediately went back to whatever she was doing.
Seldom would she ever do what I was telling her to do. It usually took an action of some sort to get her co-operation.
Much of the time she would just ignore me.
Once a CNA ask her how she was doing. After the aid left the room Luz answered with "okay".
Nothing could be done for her.
