My IHSS helper recently experienced car troubles and also more time-consuming demands from her large family. I like this helper and wish to continue with her since she's worked for me for three years. It would be nice to have a backup. Thanks for any assistance.

You may want to call your County Office of Aging and see what they offer. My County has a senior bus equipped for wheelchairs. They take clients to doctor visits and shopping. They may have other services you can use. Senior center may be able to help. United way and Redcross.

If you have full-scope California Medi-Cal and don't have another reasonable way to get to a Medi-Cal-covered medical appointment, Medi-Cal offers free Non-Medical Transportation (NMT). It can be provided by car, taxi, bus or another public/private vehicle. An 18-mile round trip within the same city shouldn't be a problem—California says there are no mileage or geographic restrictions on NMT.

If you have Medi-Cal through a managed-care plan, call the Member Services number on your insurance card and ask for "Non-Medical Transportation" to your appointment. You generally don't need a doctor's prescription for an ordinary NMT ride, although you do need to tell them that you don't have another reasonable means of transportation.

If your medical condition prevents you from traveling in an ordinary car or taxi and you need something such as a wheelchair van, that's called Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT), and that generally does require a prescription from a medical provider.

I'd call the plan as soon as you know the appointment date; California recommends requesting transportation at least five business days ahead when possible.

Thank you - I'd heard somewhere that Uber could do this for me so let's hope that is so. The nearest bus stop is about 1 mile away and I am unable to walk this or use my wheelchair that far. I have full-scope.
