I am two rooms away from my Mom's bedroom downstairs. I generally don't sleep that well as a rule, but there have been occasions where I would sleep sound and that always bothers me. Especially if she has a problem, like if she gets sick or something. We have a old time bell that she could pick up and ring to get me....but it is kinda heavy and I'm afraid she might drop in on herself and break her hand or fingers.

I was thinking about the next best thing, getting a baby monitor. One to put by me with the volume up and one to put by her with the volume up. That way if she got sick or something, I could hear her better and go to her.

Would this be a good idea?

I love my Levana with the camera. It was around $100 on line. I only wish I had bought it much sooner.

Hide it under the bed. You are not invading her privacy. You are trying to keep her safe and meet her needs.

I want to put in a monitor but I'm afraid my mother will think it's an invasion of her privacy. She's a physically modest person. There's no dementia at all, thank goodness. What do the rest of you do to preserve their sense of privacy and their dignity while making sure you know they're okay?

Consider that if you are a light sleeper every sound may keep you awake. I bought one so I could hear mom when I was out in the garden, you need to consider how far it will work if you plan on using it that way. I also found a model that works both ways, so that I could ask mom what she needed or just reassure her without having to go to her all the time (very useful). There are just so many kinds out there now and I guess you get what you pay for, but even the cheapest will do the job. If she can use a call bell perhaps a smaller bell is all you need? An inexpensive wireless door chime works great, she can have the button by her bed and you can carry the chime wherever you are.

I just used a 20 yr old monitor with sound only and it really worked well. If mom was still sleeping, I could make lunches and get kids out to school and still hear mom if she woke up. Usually I could hear her snoring softly. I would also use during the day if I went to go wash or sweep up leaves outside. You can start looking at what types of monitors are available at babies R us and go from there. Good luck

I also have the Summer brand.. I am so happy I got it.. You don't need the volume up high to hear movement..

With tax and shipping, it was just under $200.

We use a Summer brand with a camera. So far I'm happy with it and it has come in handy a couple of times. The camera is in color if there is a lot of light, but otherwise it goes to black and white. Mom gets up and down to go to the bathroom during the night and I can check to be sure she got back in bed ok. Plus if she needs me for any reason, she can call out and I can hear her. I have the capability to talk to her, but I haven't used that feature. She's so hard of hearing that I don't imagine she would hear me anyway.

Lyndee, we have been tempted to do the same for my FIL as he has fallen out of bed a few times. We have a 2-1/2 year old and can vouch for the levana models with cameras. We have a cheaper one with his sound, but picks up alot of white noise. The Levana camera model we have is nice as we have a view of our baby and sound.

Thank you Babalou for your answer. Are they very expensive? I have never really priced them before. Which brand names are the best to get?

Lots of folks here have mentioned using baby monitors. It probably is a good idea, I'm not sure I'd tell her that it was there, if she's manipulative in any way.
