It may take up to a year for benefits to begin, Have all the documents with you, the list is on the VA site. Discharge papers, birth certificate are the top of the list.

Contact your local Veterans Assistance Commission or your States Department of Veterans Affairs. You could also contact your local VA office.
If you are talking about Aid and Attendance it is means based so be prepared to bring all your necessary paperwork. You will probably also need your husbands DD-214 if you do not have that the Veterans Assistance Commission can help. You will need your husbands Social Security number or his military ID number.
Depending on when he left the service and where you live a lot of paperwork was destroyed in a fire in St. louis July 12, 1973

I think your only entitled if your husband retired with at least 20 yrs service if your looking for a pension. Then there is a formula for that, you have to have been married to him for a while and I think during his service. I have friends who were in Viet Nam and use the local VA hospital for their suppliment to Medicare. Their wives are not covered and pay for their own.

Aide and Attendance goes by income and the need for care. That could be in the home or in an Assisted Living or Memory Care. If on LTC with Medicaid paying, you can't have A&A too. You may be allowed $90 a month that goes to a Personal Needs Account.

As my SIL says, whose husband is retired AF, the wives did not serve. I think like other pensions, the pensioner has to name a Survivor at time of retirement. This means he gets less pension so the survivor will get one.

You should have a County VA office where you can talk to a representative. You will need the persons discharge papers and your marriage license and a few other things.

Google "VA survivor benefits in ____________ state". If you're the surviving wife of a husband who received Aid and Attendance benefits, call the VA officer who worked with your husband to get him those benefits. You'll get a smaller percentage of his, but you have to apply for them.

Good luck.
