This would best be answered by an Elder Law attorney with Medicaid experience specific to your state, since the rules do vary by state and also making mistakes can be expensive and stressful.

This likely varies by state specific criteria and your particular circumstances. In the case of my parents, my mom began using Medicaid after burning through a long term care policy and being private pay very briefly. The nursing home received all her SS check. Dad kept all his SS, all his retirement pension, all their checking and savings account funds, their house, and one car. He had to sell one car. It wasn’t a financial crisis for him at all
