While it makes good sense to have extra essentials......this hoarding mentality is selfish. TP, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes and sprays, thermometers etc. Are hard, if not impossible to find. Grocery stores are essential businesses and will remain open. So will pharmacies, and then there is always the big box that will deliver. The main purpose of the stay in place order is to slow the spread of the virus and not overwhelm our healthcare system (N.Y. is already there). What bothers me most is still seeing crowds of people completely ignoring social distancing. They put others at risk and our most vulnerable in harms way. So PLEASE people, stop buying more than what will get you through for two weeks and unless you absolutely have to go out.....stay home!! Lives depend on it.....COVID19 does not discriminate, but certainly overwhelms the most fragile among us. Take care everyone!

no, this virus doesn't care what you are.. but a lipid living thing, that it can attach to, and perhaps jump to another carrier when it precariously happens, or does it have a small brain? A very teeny, tiny brain, maybe.. who knows. Someone said it doesn't like the sun,,, Vitamine D. or C.... or maybe send some into Cryo Innovations, cryo genics chamber, and see what happens to it?

NeedHelpWithMom, Yes, we occasionally have fireflies in the summer. When I was a kid at my grandma's in Chicago, we had lots of them, but only recently have ever seen them out here in the Black Hills. I lived for years in Florida, and really like the deep fried alligator, deep fried conch, conch chowder - now I'm homesick!

Mally,

That’s how my daughter and I ate the gator. It was bite sized fried gator served as an appetizer.

I love Florida. My daddy grew up in Florida so we went to the beach every summer. Those white sand beaches and blue-green water, so very pretty! 😊

We can dream of it!

My state has just been given a 'stay at home order', only essential business. This is for Monday and today the traffic looks like Christmas - so this should work really well! If the whole country had been locked down sooner, maybe things would be different. Now all the business people are running around trying to get all their work done before Monday and I imagine the stores are crowded with people panicking and trying to get a bunch of groceries before Monday. So much for that idea.

Well the water service is now complaining that all the baby wipes people without babies foolishly hoarded, are CLOGGING the pipes. Gee ya think? The lack of common sense among this community never ceases to amaze me!

I went to Nob Hill Thursday night and Costco yesterday afternoon. And All paper products were sold out. Of course they were! Same with Clorox & Lysol wipes. I couldn’t even get my liquid dish soap at Costco because it’s sold out! And to my surprise, they have raised the limit of 2 cases of water per member to 5! As I was walking through the parking lot, I kept seeing people walking out with 4-5 cases in their cart and I was thinking what the heck is going on here? I’m gonna be pissed if I get in there and there is no water left! Well there was maybe 25 cases left by the time I made my way to the back of the store. They’ve done a number on the inside of the store too! I guess to accommodate the boards of people who line up at 3am and rush inside when the doors open at 9, they’ve blocked partial access to the back of the store where the water, toilet paper and cleaning supplies are. You have to go a certain route and there’s no way cut through like there was before. Anyway bought 2 cases of water. Hubby said I should have bought 5. WHY THOUGH? So I can contribute to the problem? 2 cases will last us 2 weeks.

It looks like I am going to have to start getting up at the crack of dawn so I can be at the grocery stores When open, if I want to buy toilet paper. I have an emergency plan in case we run out but my family will NOT be happy with me if I have to implement it LOL!!

I went in to hubby’s bathroom last night
and not only does he have 3 rolls of TP hidden away in there but he is hoarding 10 packages of the fancy bum wipes he gets from the dollar shave club!!!!! SMH. Guess I know where to look first, when we run out of TP. We can use the wipes he’s hoarding!

Mally,

You know how rats do live in metro areas. Lord here, we have rats. Cajun areas they eat the nutria and alligator, squirrels, etc. Well, we have gator dishes in a few restaurants here too. I have had it. It’s good. My daughter and I tried a gator appetizer.

What wildlife do you see? Do you have fireflies? Those are so cool. We don’t see those in the city. But I remember being in a rural area as a kid and seeing them light up and I thought they were so cool!

We did our last grocery shopping today. With the 45 confirmed cases, it's time to hunker down. Told oldest sis we will now start eating sparingly to make the food last as long as possible. I have absolutely no desire to go out in public. We bought another bag of 20 lbs. Jasmine rice. We were looking at the 50 lbs rice. I told sis that it's too heavy to lift - even if we did it together.... I'm tired... And this ordeal is just beginning.... I miss fave sis!!!

NeedHelpWithMom, that's a first for me.   I hadn't thought about undesirable vermin and changes in their normal diet and eating modes.   That's unsettling... as if there aren't enough problems already.

Would this be an opportune time to add rat poison to foods that they might seek?   They're undesirable vermin and do carry diseases, so I think that would be justified.

Yeah, the mayor made me laugh talking about ‘our rats’ are marching down streets looking for food. The mayor said she is going to set traps.

She was concerned about disease. But hey, they are a part of the circle of life.

Certain areas now have the coyotes that are going after small dogs. It’s weird but people are taking over their land all over so it will happen.

I got an email from our congregation yesterday about a particular member who needs shopping done. Another member volunteered her college age son, saying that she knows that this man wants certain items from certain stores. I emailed back that it would be better use of the son's time to teach this gentleman how to order online than to bounce from store to store. "Oh, but he is so particular" is not cutting it these days.

I was chatting with my neighbour from across the street yesterday and she was telling me about her shopping experiences during early seniors only hours:
One older lady from up the street was shopping for a group but was distressed because she was only allowed 1 bag of milk (we get our milk in bags, one 4 litre bag contains 3 smaller bags), she'd have to come back again to get more. And why couldn't she split this with her friend in order to make due? Why because she wanted 1% and her friend wanted 2%.
Another person was out in search of toothpaste, because their grandkids liked a different kind than the adults in the house.
Still others were making a certain recipe an needed particular ingredients.

Hello? Pandemic going on out here, we're supposed to be practising self isolation and all that....🙄. Our leaders have been tossing out the war analogy - if instead of a virus it was an enemy sniper with a gun would we still risk going to the store for such trivial "needs"?

Ahhhh, life in the city! Isn’t it great? Our mayor has said that our rodents are super hungry because the restaurants are closed so they aren’t eating the food out of the dumpsters behind the bars and restaurants.

So the rats are marching down empty streets looking for food. She is concerned about the diseases that rats carry. Geeeeez!

Anyone else’s mayor discussing how the rats are hungry in their city? Bizarre, huh? I realize all metro areas have rats but it’s just a topic that isn’t discussed on a daily basis.

Anyone else have any interesting local news stories to share?

Let’s hope the stray cats in your neighborhood are up to par in facing these hungry marauding rats. (My brother has seen these wave of rats from the other neighborhood to ours at night in his security camera. He’s also seen the stray cats going after it.)

Maybe the mayor can organize the musicians to stand outside their balcony and play their instruments/voice to hypnotize the rats like the Famous Pied Piper. Can’t say that there wasn’t any precedent. Eek! Gross just imagining it.

My nephew's wife doesn't/didn't believe in stocking up or shopping sales so she normally grocery shops 2-3 times a week, often shopping for the meal she wants to cook. She also buys a lot of freezer to microwave food so the boys can prepare their own snacks and meals. Previously I could not convince her to even consider purchasing a second fridge so she could buy a week's worth of milk and eggs for the 6 growing boys and men of her household. She says frozen meat doesn't taste as good so she's not interested in shopping meat sales.

How things have changed in the last couple of weeks... Her household now has both a second fridge and a freezer. When she finds milk, bread or eggs, she wants to be able to store them for a few days until they are consumed. Leftovers are to be frozen and not discarded. Fortunately the local groceries had sales on beef and chicken in January and my freezer was fully stocked and I have been able to provide some frozen meat and other groceries, but NIL still hasn't adapted to conserving resources much. For example, I use beans in my chili and while there's limited ground beef availability I decreased the amount of meat and added two more cans of beans, using 1.5 lbs of beef and 6 cans of beans in 10 qt of chili which provides 12-14 large servings. A 10 qt pot of chili or soup is consumed in one day when the boys are home. NIL still wants to make chili without any beans using 4.5 lbs of chili for about 6 qts. I opened one of my cans of dehydrated ground beef from the long term pantry and found it works well in seasoned dishes; chili, spaghetti, tacos, enchiladas, lasagna, etc. so I'm saving the "real" ground beef for hamburgers and meatloaf; NIL doesn't want to use the dehydrated food supplies at all. I really cannot tell the difference in good re-hydrated vegetables and grocery store canned food except the salt content is lower. I've been using dehydrated onions, celery, carrots, potatoes and the like for cooking for several years, both because they are easier to keep and to avoid slicing and dicing. Fortunately my nephew can afford to purchase food from drive thru windows, at least for now.

schrederkim, I'm so sorry for what you and your Mother are going through.  This is happening all over.  It's got to worry you to death.

It's good she's in a facility, but I get that she's not independent, nor can be, and add hospital return.  Thank God you have a nurse with her M-F. Would a nurse/s go Sat & Sun?  Could you ask her Dr. to prescribe Home Health Care or whatever help she needs that would be covered by an insurer (Medicare, etc.) since she was just released from the hospital for congestive heart failure?

I went to 5 stores today... NO PAPER GOODS... I sat in line to get into a couple of stores, waited for a person to come out, so I could go in... Social Distancing.. Or should we call it Physical Distancing? No closer than 6 feet away... Kleenex or other facial tissue paper can work... 2 ply, separate the 2 ply so they don't do damage to the drains... and if that doesn't keep the body clean, use a baby wipe, but throw that in the trash..facial cleansing wipes work too.
I guess more people should start backpacking and "roughing it" again, so we can get used to the new norm... That goes for water too... If you don't trust the water that is pumped into your home, boil it for 20 minutes? and use a water pitcher with filter... then refrigerate it.. I suppose...Boiling water should be good enough. And if you see a neighbor with a lemon tree, full of lemons... ask for a couple of them...It's better than seeing them rot.. I gave away a lot of lemons... this tree is supposed to be a miniature.. When they come in.. and I don't need all of them,, I will pack them up in recycled bags, and hand them out to people I know and don't know..I mail them to friends, a couple of good customers from work.. and they appreciate it. But it's a good way to meet your neighbors.:)

Today I had a miracle happen!!
At least it was miraculous to me!!
Had to make a trip to the grocery store. As has become my norm, I went to the paper goods isle.
Once again, NO TOILET PAPER!!!
I resigned myself to the fact that I was gonna have to cut up more paper towels(put them in the trash. Don't ever put them in the toilet!).
While standing at the check out I spot a woman with a 12 pack of TP. I asked her where she found it??? She told me that they just found a box in the stockroom and the clerk was putting it on the shelf now! My hubby turned to me and said "RUN"!!!
I am happy to announce that I am now the proud owner of a 12 pack of TP!! At least for a while!!
Maybe a small victory, but a victory none the less!!

One person went to the ER in mid-March for feeling sick.  It was determined she didn't have the flu and she was admitted in a regular room.   It seems after further testing, she's a confirmed case.  And 3 nurses who attended her from the time she was admitted to current - are now confirmed cases, too.  All 4 are now in isolation.... 3 nurses knocked out at one time.

Someone called the radio station complaining that when he called 911, the EMT refused to go near him.  He complained that he had to do his own temperature.  Because he didn't have a fever, he was not seriously ill to be taken to the ER.  Radio announcer had to reason with him - to see why he couldn't go to the ER, that he wouldn't even want to go there at this time, etc... He eventually calmed down.

Lots of news on our local channel tonight.

Our local musicians are writing songs and since they can’t perform at their regular gigs at this time, they are playing their instruments on their front porches for neighbors who step outside on their porches. They are also having virtual concerts online with virtual tip jars!

They are taking a hit like many others. Our film industry is suffering too. Nothing is being filmed. No conventions at the convention center downtown. On and on and on. Our towns and cities have come to a halt, haven’t they?

Our numbers are going up. Just about 1400 confirmed cases now and over 40 deaths.

Our police officers, firefighters and medical personnel are among the infected. The clergy as well. Our archbishop has the virus.

The largest number of cases are in New Orleans but it’s spreading throughout the state. The lockdown that was previously only in New Orleans is now mandatory for the entire state. This is all so sad. 😞

I wish our lives could go back to normal. Lots of changes for everyone. I am hoping for the very best for each and everyone of you and hope things will ease up as soon as it possibly can.
