Can I turn over my father's small paid up police & his veterans life insurance to the funeral home to prepay final expenses? I don't want to cash it in just sign it over. Do I have to have the original policy or are the account numbers enough?

I believe it's called assigning it; my dad used to sell insurance and that's what he would have his clients do but I don't quite understand the still paying on a paid up policy, unless you're calling the face value the cash value?

An owner of an insurance policy can, imop, make the nursing home, or the mortuary/cemetary a beneficiary of the life insurance policy.
Others will know more, but wanted to ask about this for you.

It was paid up, but I was still paying monthly payments which gave me $30,000 more than the face value. They won't let me stop paying. I don't get it, but I still own it, and I am so glad because it was the only money I had to put towards his nursing care home. He has had alzheimer's for over ten years and just went into the home last Sept. He was getting aggressive towards me and I was scared of him!

is your policy a paid-up kind?

I did this. I happened to own the policy. It was my only asset. I called the company and my representative worked it out with me. I ended up borrowing against the policy. The best part is that I still own the policy and will still get something back when he dies. Not all of it, but some of it. I used the money for the Medicaid spend-down. I paid for the nursing home, the funeral, my debts and how repairs. Now I am down to nothing and hopefully the Medicaid will kick in soon. It is retroactive back to Dec. 1st, 2015. I do have to pay back the interest in September on the insurance loan. Hopefully I will be able to do that. I am scrimping and saving for that!

Call the insurance company for help with that. Of course they may not talk to you, they want to talk to the policy owner. And he must be competent, if he talks in garble, nothing will be accomplished. So if the dementia is advanced, only a DPOA or Guardian can handle financial items.

How do i buy a policy off of him?

You need to find the policy, call the insurance company for help with that. No funeral home will accept just the policy numbers. The policy OWNER is the one who signs it over.
If it has a small cash value as opposed to the face amount, I would buy the policy off of Dad and make my self the owner of it. Then it is not an issue with Medicaid.
