It’s worth calling Medicaid’s or Medicare. If you are within their guidelines, maybe you can be paid.

In the state of Illinois, we can be paid to care for our Moms (Dads,Aunts/Uncles, Grandparents, Brothers/Sisters, Spouses/Significant others who are over 60 and Children 18yoa-59 with a different department). Even if you are the POA, you just apply and the State will rule on it on a case by case basis. As others have said, if she is over assets ($17,500 non exempt yearly) she should wouldn't qualify for the Community Care Program. We have a Private care department as well, Mom's Medicare and good insurance company would pay you for the hours she chose for you to care for her. Our company is a Home Care Aide Agency, non-medical. Research Home Care Aid (HCAs) companies in your area. They can send a referral to Senior Services, this save you A LOT of time and headaches. IF she does have a managed care insurance such as Catholic Charities, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, Aetna, Meridian, etc, she may still qualify through her insurance. Whatever Medicare does not cover, you can go to your local Senior Services Office to apply for in-home services. They will set up an appointment to "assess" your Senior in their home. They will check your assets and determine your need. After the DON, Determination of need, the Department on Aging will advise Senior Services how many hours of in home services you will be allowed. They will give you a list of agencies to choose from like my company. We start at $18,75/hour, $2.75 over minimum wage in Chicago. You apply for a job with whatever agency you pick and let them know you are bringing your own client. Senior Services sends the paperwork to said agency and you go to work! Sounds complicated, but it's really not. If I can learn it after 52, you can. Best of luck. I hope I've helped a little. God bless.

Yes… and no.

Yes - She can pay you (which was suggested before), or you can get paid through Medicaid through the Adult Foster Care program.

No - If like my mother, she has too much money and doesn’t qualify for the Medicaid program. In MA, you can’t have more than $2,000 in the bank, so Mom would have to spend down all but the $2000 in order for me to be paid $1500/mo before taxes.

jerrigirl, welcome to the forum. There are a couple possible ways of getting paid. One is for your Mom to pay you. If she can, then you would need to create an employment contract www.agingcare.com/articles/personal-care-agreements-compensate-family-caregivers-181562.htm and in this article is a copy of a contract.

Another way of possibly being paid is if your Mom can qualify for Medicaid (which is different from Medicare). Medicaid is State run, and is paid by the taxpayers. Call your local Medicaid office. But note, the pay might be minimum wage with a limited number of hours each week. Hope you find something that works out for you.
