My brother lives with them but is not cut out to be a caregiver. My mom is a stroke survivor, my dad has Parkinson's - they don't want to leave the house and they have used all their retirement savings. We do not have the financial ability to support them. It is hitting crisis mode with my brother, I am afraid someone is going to get hurt

Find Care & Housing
If you are afraid someone is going to get hurt, call the local police. Make a written report. Keep a copy. Also report the situation to Adult Protective Services. Report this situation to as many authorities you can find, and hopefully nobody will get "hurt". As a side benefit, some social worker will scope things out and perhaps see that brother should not be living there, and parents need proper care (whether it is in-home or in a facility). Who has DPOA and medical POA? That person needs to be calling the shots here.

dreenstow, you can't force them to go anywhere. So, like many of us, you wait for one or the other to land in the hospital and go to a nursing home on Medicaid. In the meantime go up to the Money and Legal tab and click on Paying for Care.

Also, until the county can cover the cost of help coming into the relieve your brother of the stress of care giving, try asking for volunteer help through a senior link program or aging foundation in your parents area. Sometimes even a church they belong to will have volunteers to help some.

I am not sure which state you live in but in MN, in order to get help, you need to fill out a long term care application through the county you are in. The state sets the amount of assets and income they are allowed to have in order to qualify for financial help with services offered by home health or county pca services. If they only have the house, they should be allowed (meaning it would not count as an asset against the allowable asset limit) to stay there and have home health come in. It is a big process to take on, but go in to their county human services office today and start getting trying to get them eligible. It takes months for paperwork to be processed, so the sooner the better.

If brother is flat out abusive, or harm to them is imminent call Adult Protective Services.

If brother is just not a very good supervisor, talk with Area Agency on Aging and find out if they could get on Medicaid and see about community waiver services in addition to the brother; which might help them stay at home.

If it is not possible for them to stay in the home, they may have to sell and use whatever income they have for buying in and then renting or monthly fees in an independent or assisted living community - some start with reasonable fees that include all utilities and some meal services, and might lead to life care if their needs increase.
