Does anyone try to screen news from those with dementia? I'm frustrated now, trying to keep the news off tonight. My mom just does not understand these things, and usually thinks her grown up kids are little children again. I want to keep the news off tonight, knowing the impact it is going to have on my mom. But her husband comments that we can't get away from it. All we have to do is not turn on the news. He can see all he wants tomorrow in the paper.

You are definitely correct, they are an extremely paranoid set. Though my mom has not been diagnosed with Lewy Body, she has with Alzheimer's. We are in Colorado where we had a terrible summer with fires. The biggest of which, Waldo Canyon, is about 60 miles from here. We made the mistake of watching coverage, that was on all day, every day, for about a week. After the first day we did not watch any more. Mom kept going outside to try to figure out how to turn on the sprinklers to keep the fire away. She has no concept of the distance that this fire was from here. Tonight she is in a place where her children are young again, wondering why my siblings aren't here. Then we add to it this tragedy in Connecticut. My mom would have placed my sisters there easily.

I know exactly how you feel. My mom has been in a NH for the last 3 months, and believe me with the type of dementia she has (Lewy Body) she hears what is on the other lady's tv,. Then she has horrible things going through her mind! Today she thought everybody at the nursing home is trying to kill her, and me! The other day, she thought the Mafia was running the place, and that we owe money and someone is going to get us. I wish the NH had a channel that just played soft music. They don't. Mom doesn't know how to turn on the radio any more, and she can't learn how to work a CD player. I just wish there was something I could do so she could hear calming music instead of all the horrible news that is out there. It makes these poor older ones more scared and paranoid.
