I am a solo ager in need of a healthcare power of attorney. I have hired a lawyer to serve as my financial power of attorney, but he is not comfortable serving as a healthcare proxy. What type of professional can I hire to serve in this role, and how do I find one?

Yes to what Geaton said.

Something you can do on your own is talk to your doctor about how to clarify your wishes as much as possible right now. If you're part of a healthcare system which includes the hospital you'd be most likely to use make sure the hospital system has your "living will" AKA advanced healthcare directive on file. Many healthcare systems have a social worker on staff who can help you create this document too.

Try a Geriatric Care Manager.

If you fill out an Advance Healthcare Directive with your doctor and put very specific instructions in it, it will remove a lot of second guessing by your MPoA and will make their responsibilities more clear and less stressful.

You might want to consider a guardianship arrangement. Where I live in MN there is Lutheran Social Services, which is a non-profit organization that trains and provides guardians for the courts and privately (and you don't have to be Lutheran or of any faith). They have a presence in many other states, so check yours for Lutheran Services in America.

You can also do a browser search for:
"Private guardianship services"+"non-profit"+[your state or near zip code]"
