Based on your preferences, we provide you with information about one or more of our contracted senior living providers ("Participating Communities") and provide your Senior Living Care Information to Participating Communities. The Participating Communities may contact you directly regarding their services. APFM does not endorse or recommend any provider. It is your sole responsibility to select the appropriate care for yourself or your loved one. We work with both you and the Participating Communities in your search. We do not permit our Advisors to have an ownership interest in Participating Communities.
II. How We Are Paid. We do not charge you any fee – we are paid by the Participating Communities. Some Participating Communities pay us a percentage of the first month's standard rate for the rent and care services you select. We invoice these fees after the senior moves in.
III. When We Tour. APFM tours certain Participating Communities in Washington (typically more in metropolitan areas than in rural areas.) During the 12 month period prior to December 31, 2017, we toured 86.2% of Participating Communities with capacity for 20 or more residents.
IV. No Obligation or Commitment. You have no obligation to use or to continue to use our services. Because you pay no fee to us, you will never need to ask for a refund.
V. Complaints. Please contact our Family Feedback Line at (866) 584-7340 or ConsumerFeedback@aplaceformom.com to report any complaint. Consumers have many avenues to address a dispute with any referral service company, including the right to file a complaint with the Attorney General's office at: Consumer Protection Division, 800 5th Avenue, Ste. 2000, Seattle, 98104 or 800-551-4636.
VI. No Waiver of Your Rights. APFM does not (and may not) require or even ask consumers seeking senior housing or care services in Washington State to sign waivers of liability for losses of personal property or injury or to sign waivers of any rights established under law.I agree that: A.I authorize A Place For Mom ("APFM") to collect certain personal and contact detail information, as well as relevant health care information about me or from me about the senior family member or relative I am assisting ("Senior Living Care Information"). On my mom's death certificate: renal failure, dehydration, encephalopathy, cerebrovascular disease. My thought until seeing this: She died of old age. Seeing dehydration caused me a pang, even though I understand.
It didn't affect me one way or the other tbh. My mother died at 95 from dementia and congestive heart failure.
Was an autopsy performed on your mom? Because that's quite a lot of "official" causes of death, my God.
Basically, both of our mother's did die of old age. The details don't really matter now that they're at perfect peace. That's my take on things. It was a relief for me to hear that mom had passed because she'd been miserable for 3 years. I do understand your pang at the dehydration mention, although I technically think all elders who linger die from dehydration as one cause.

It wasn’t hurtful to me because my dad had long expressed his desire to leave this world and I was glad he was at peace. Hopefully this doesn’t sound crass, I don’t mean it to, I kinda view the cause of death list much like those pharmaceutical ads where every possible side effect is rattled off. The doctor doing the death certificate lists every possible contributing factor, and by the time a person is elderly, there’s quite a list. It’s okay, our bodies aren’t built to last forever. Why would they even list dehydration. I think most of us are if we aren't drinking constantly. My Moms cause was actually Dementia but her death certificate said heart failure.
Dementia (if diagnosed) is often the underlying cause of an elder's death but not the literal direct cause. It woud be things like dehydration, infection, pneumonia, etc. Think of it this way: a person with cancer passes not because a tumor stopped their heart, but because of a complex of issues that caused organ failure, infection, etc. My friends' son (age 33) just passed after an 8-yr battle with glioblastoma. The tumor isn't what directly killed him, the impact of the tumor did.

We don't traditionally get a certificate that lists cause of death but I did ask for that. I felt some satisfaction that it was what I expected (aspiration pneumonia and dementia), it felt like that the doctor was working from the same playbook as I was.
