Doesn't Medicare cover this cost? She is blind and disabled. She can't afford to pay for this. Any ideas?

Ask one of her doctors to write a script for home health care assistance. Generally (at least in my experience), an RN will do the intake assessment and can generate an order for a home health aide.

Assuming that your aunt is insured with Medicare, it's been my experience that it will cover this, although I don't know if it would pay indefinitely as we haven't been in that situation.

The fact that your aunt is blind and disabled may, however, be an issue for which Medicare would provide an aide indefinitely.

Another option is to try one of the no-rinse products. We've used them for shampooing; I just recently bought one that's also used for bathing - it's a no rinse bath. I used that when I had emergency surgery last year - it didn't provide the refreshment of a shower but it certainly made me feel clean and human again.

Another thought - if you don't have a chair to sit in while showering, or better yet one of the slide chairs for getting into the bathtub for a shower, it would help your aunt get in and out of the tub/shower area much more safely.

You can buy them at a DME store, but if a doctor scripts for it, you could also try to get Medicare assistance.

Have you seen the "Medicare and You" 2015 booklet? It offers a lot of insight into what Medicare will and will not cover.

My dad had a bath aide and Medicare covered it.

Contact your local area agency on aging and ask about in home programs. There may also be other services she could benefit from. Good for her for living at home, I hope you're able to locate some help for her.
