I don't think so. That would be a gift (I think).

Agree with Jeanne. A parent can pay for their own funeral expenses, but not another person's.

I love the type-o "pat down." I'm sure it feels that way at times.

Memaw- is your mom already in a NH? So she's private pay but will need to or has applied for Medicaid? If so, I'd suggest you speak with the Medicaid caseworker for the NH that she is in. Some states want for those already a NH resident to have the spend down to be just on payments just towards their stay at the NH.

Keep in mind that most of what you Google on spend down, is on moving $ & assets BEFORE they move into a NH and BEFORE the Medicaid application is needed.

NOPE she can't. It will cause a dollar for dollar penalty.

Medicaid application should require them to turn in a copy of the policy. The Medicaid caseworker will likley actually look at the policy to see if it's medicaid compliant too. As Mom will have to turn in a copy of the preneed done for both the funeral & burial so buying for others will be obvious.

For newer polices, the FH does them as NCV (no cash value) as that's what Medicaid requires & enables the FH to know they are getting paid.
