He has to sleep with his head elevated and winds up sliding down the bed. So I need one that will provide enough coverage to protect him from falling out. But I also need one that he can manipulate easily due to neuropathy and arthritis in his hands. We found one that I thought would work, but it turns out to have 2 buttons he has to pull out and maneuver. Very frustrating at night when he needs to get to the bathroom quickly. Anybody else ever face this or have some suggestions? I'm beginning to think that we need to just invest in a better bed.

I did some more reading on the subject. Maybe you should talk to his doctor. See if he thinks your dad's case is an exception to when the benefit of the bed rails are greater than the risks. They do offer padded rails that are supposed to be safer. I would really do a lot checking in order to make my decision about it.

Maybe a physical therapist could think of some options to prevent him falling out of bed. They know about body movements and reactions. Do you know of any?

He leans to the right, whether walking, sitting, or sleeping. He has had part of his cerebellum atrophy, and this causes the leaning issue. That's why he falls out of bed.

I was thinking that he's in a hospital bed, but if not, I too would wonder why he slides out.

Have you thought about putting a commode in the bedroom?

Is there a continency protection pad underneath the sheets? Sometimes these pads, as well as the ones used by hospitals, don't grip the plastic or vinyl covering for the mattress and prevent people from using their hips to "grip" the bed.

I never would have realized this until I was hospitalized for emergency surgery and felt as if I was battling the protective pad to keep from sliding down and ending up in a crumpled up lump on the bed.

I would explore the different bed idea. Would it help if he is on a larger bed and slept in the middle?

I'm trying to envision why he falls out due to the mattress being elevated.

I've even read of people who put the senior's mattress directly on the floor to safeguard against them falling out.

I researched bed rails before and found that there are a lot of safety concerns. Most places forbid them, unless you are in a hospital. They end up causing a lot of injuries and death with seniors. Due to this, I wouldn't recommend them.
