I want a safe, clean place and need government assistance. I am independent and able to care for myself, I drive, even at night. I am moving from Florida and would like to be near family in Mesquite. I do not need assisted living at this time. I would like some idea of cost.

Nevada or Texas? In either case, you could start by searching online for subsidized houseing + city + state. Also try low income housing in the search.

Subsidized housing costs are generally based on income, and (at least here) don't exceed about 30% of your income. There are eligibility requirements. Often there are waiting lists.

Once you've done some online searching, you'll probably come up with a few numbers to call.

Good luck!

Are you on Medicaid? Whether you are now or need to be in the future, you'll need to do the paperwork for your new state. Also, as Jeanne says, there are generally waiting lists for subsidized housing. I'd ask your family do do some research about state requirements for Medicaid and see how long a waiting list there is for subsidized housing. I'm afraid this won't be a quick fix but if you want to move, you should start the ball rolling. Make those calls and then ask you family to help. Good luck,
Carol

I am moving from Florida in June of 2013. I am not on Medicade. Is that required to receive Govt assistance?? Don't think I qualify, but I should check it out.

No. Being on Medicaid is not a requirement for subsisized housing (at least not in this state). You will need to meet some financial guidelines, but they aren't the same as qualifying for Medicaid, and also the medical need requirements of Mediciaid will not apply to subsidized housing.

Carol is right that it is wise to start the Medicaid application process as soon as possible if you need it, but I don't think that is a requirement for subsidized housing.

Good luck!

My biggest problem is I don't know where to look. There are many over 55, govt subsidized housing places. Some are like apartment buildings and some are like villas, or duplexes, 4 plexes. All I have seen are very well kept and safe. I know if they have that here in Fla they must have just as many in Texas. Some are managed by the Presbyterian Church or some large group. These are not Section 8, they are self contained subdivisions. Thanks
