He is in his home still, i stay here and look after him,not in a medical capacity, just look after him because i'm here. his kids never come here the one only calls every night. he is getting very bad and can't even remember something from an hour or so previously. he complains non stop about me lately to his daughter who tells him not to listen to anything i tell him,because she thinks he just fine. i've talked to her,and tried to explain to her that she wouldn't be able to tell he has ahlztimers/dementia from a few minutes phone call. she encourages him to do as he pleases such as get in the tub when i'm not here,he did and laid there on the floor for more than an hour. i had to get the neighbor to help me again with picking him up. he has dizziness, high blood pressure,no side of his eyes vision and he's got gluacoma in both eyes.he has to take 4 different eye drops every 3 hours. this is in addition to the original cause of his needing eye glasses. he still drives even though his eyes are so bad. he has started having a lot of confusion and hallucinations. i talked to his heart doctor last week about this and the way his family is reacting. that is the only doctor he has,not because of insurance or money just because he flat refuses to get a regular doctor too.even though the heart doctor asked him to. so,i'm hoping that the doctor talked to the V.A. and the V.A. will be able to do something, before he kills himself or someone else with his driving. he spoke to an elderly friend and the friend told him that that letter is to get h thanks for reading and for or any help...

THIS is from the asker of the above question. somehow i didn't get the last sentence complete before submitting it.
it should have read;
he spike to an elderly friend and the friend told him that that letter is to get him in front of a geriatric doctor and that this type of doctor will know if he's got ahlztimers and could send him to a nursing home,so he's very mad now and is calling and visiting the V.A. constantly, trying to get it cancelled but they won't so he's trying to get it rescheduled which they refuse to do.

A geriatric Dr specializes in care of the elderly. Your patient is probablly seeing multiple Drs and taking a lot of medication. His medication could be causing the dementia. A geriatric Dr will eliminate a lot of medication and Dr visits to specialists, and give him a better medical care and outcome.

Thanks,but he only sees the heart doctor.that doctor does prescribe the meds he's taking.even though he has just one medicine for the heart.he refuses to get a general physician.he will be 89 in dec 2014. i have lived here for 6 years now and am familiar with his doctor and med. he's taking about 8 different meds a day. this letter is out of the blue,he refuses to even consider that he has anything wrong with him such as memory problems and decision making skills and all the other dementia/alzheimers type ailments. he didn't ask to see this V.A. doctor. which is why i wondered if the heart doctor called the V.A. and talked to them about him.
thanks again :-)

Geriatric assessment will determine if he needs help at home, which the VA will pay for. VA will also ask if there is someone like yourself who looks in on him. If it is safe enough for him to stay home, he will. If there is only one heart med, who is prescribing the other seven meds? Make sure the geriatric doctor sees all those pill bottles, because the wrong meds can cause confusion and hallucinations. Thank you for looking out for him.
