I am trying to get my mother some help during the day or night. My Mother is 95 years old and only has Medicare. She is currently getting chemo every 2 1/2 months and lives by herself. Can you get home care if they are only on Medicare. I am in the process of getting her Medicaid. my mother lives in Flushing N.Y.

I don't think so. Medicare doesn't even pay you to care for your parent. Does your mom have another insurance that might cover this? Otherwise, I'm afraid not. But, to be sure, why don't you call the Medicare's 1800 number?

Bookluvr is right. Medicare won't pay for what is considered custodial care. They will only pay for nursing care out of the hospital. If she has long-term care insurance, they may cover part of the cost. But do give Medicare a call or go to Medicare.gov. There's a lot of information on that site.

You can also go to your state website and type in "aging services". Follow all of the links. Your state may offer some help with respite care.
Good luck,
Carol
