I'm in a Westchester County, NY nursing facility and the other day they cut down on CNA's on each floor. On the 3-11 pm shift is outrageous only 1 female CNA 1 male CNA. The men can't care for women so he gets all the men while the woman gets all females that's about 26 females and 15 of them are total Care. Before I email the state I want to know how many patients can 1 CNA have?

New York does not have a law for staff ratios. First shift is usually 10:1 and second shift is much less. 11pm-7am shift is absolutely bare bones. You can call in your complaint; call 1-855-582-6769.

Well, not 26, anyway.

Have you raised this issue with the facility's managers?

Wow! That's a lot of Residents! We had 60 Residents on our floor. I worked Evening shift 2:00pm to 10:00pm. There were six if us, we each had 10 Residents..I'm in NJ but I think in any state you are seriously under staffed.

Is this a nursing home or assisted living?
And I'm sure the female nurses care for the men who live there, why can't the male nurse care for the female residents?

I think where I live the law allows up to 20 patients per CNA; however, I also think they sometimes handle more patients when the employees don't show up for work on a last-minute basis.

Depends on their level of care really. Male carers can attend to female residents unless the resident does not want a male. Female carers can attend to male residents again, unless requested not to.
Talk to the manager of the facility for an accurate explanation would be my suggestion.

To answer Cwillie reply.. this is a nursing home. Yes, there are a few man patients that has female workers because thats their request but the 5 yrs I've been here never saw a male care for women. On my floor 2 men have no choice now the male has to care for them. This is a poorly runed facility as matter fact when I looked up ratings for this place it was worst rated in my county.
