My mother, 96 with dementia and probably thinking herself quite clever, has a tendency to let lose her urine stream before or after being put on the toilet.

She's in rehab now and this results in frustrated aides and therapists, not to mention soiled slacks.

Actually, Mom did this to me before a fall sent her to the hospital and then to rehab. And I have every reason to believe she'll continue to indulge in this game when she comes home in two weeks.

Any ideas will be appreciated. Thank you

A pee sniper, have you considered a career as a humor coloumnist. I got a good laugh thank you. You know your mom best. If it is delibrate, maybe she craves more physical affection, and this is her way of getting it. I read somewhere older people are starved for physical affection, their skin craves a human touch. So when I dress Dad, I caress his feet and calves, and when I put his shirt on, I caress his shoulders and back, when i straighten it. May be crazy but Dad's happier.

Try having your Mom lean forward, while she is on the toilet. This allows a lot more stream to come out.

Gigi I know it *feels* like they're being deliberately annoying but - as I remind myself at least three times a day - they aren't. Honest!

But you can't help wondering.

TO FOLLOW UP . . . Thank you! Good answers and food for thought.

Yes, I had been putting pull-ups on Mom and think a better alternative would be adult diapers with the side fasteners. I want to try and put the new one in place before removing the one that's soiled -- the way we do with baby boys to avoid getting squirted. :-)

And I agree to give her the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps she can't help it. The problem remains the same, but at least my thoughts would be more uplifted, right?

Thanks again for your help.

Flyer and Pam, it sounds like this might be something she can't help, rather than being deliberate. If that is the case, are there ways to reduce the problem?

It could be a structural problem related to uterine or pelvic prolapse. Typically, the person stops peeing, but when they try to stand up from the toilet seat, more urine leaks out. Same with sitting down. The more children you have, the more likely this will happen.

Think about this.... ever notice if you are sitting for awhile you don't have a urge to use the bathroom.... BUT as soon as you stand up, after a long sitting, there is an immediate urge?..... but when you sit back down, that urge sometimes goes away?

Maybe that is what your Mother is experiencing which is normal because we aren't noticing it happening with ourselves.

It sounds like it is time for her to go to 24/7 nursing care. My mother was quite the dependent, until she went to the NH. Now, she is fine and they have her behaving nicely. She is 95.

Does she wear adult diapers? If not, that may be an idea.
