After lots of choosing, preparing my husband finally moved to facility. This is getting harder than I anticipated. How to deal with it? I keep busy seeing friends and having hobbies but realization that we will never live together again is getting to me.He is actually very OK, I am a mess. What helped others?

Find Care & Housing
Spending a lot of time with him in the facility. Making friends with other spouses there who are doing the same. I haven’t found socializing with other friends to be very helpful because they have no idea what my life is like now and I don’t want to burden them or answer questions. I still love being with my husband even though he is much different now. I also enjoy interacting with his friends in memory care and have come to appreciate what wonderful people they still are.

My Mom was allowed to stay in an AL because she was easy. We would visit in the common area. I got in a little socialization too because not everyone had Dementia. When I had my granson, he was 2 or 3, I would take him with me. The residents love seeing children and Mom enjoyed it to. One of the men liked rolling a ball to him and having grandson bring it back. I always found someone to talk to. I enjoyed the events they had too.

I can’t truly appreciate what it is like to place a spouse since I have not . But I imagine it’s much harder than placing a parent .
I’m sure it’s a huge adjustment that takes time . Fawnby has excellent advice .
