My dad is unable to walk or move his left arm because of a stroke. He has been in the hospital (bedridden) for 3 weeks. The hospital is waiting for an open rehab bed to transfer him. Is it possible for me to hire my own P/T to work with my Dad in the hospital while we wait for a rehab bed to become available?

Find Care & Housing
Where I live PT and OT are only done in Rehab. The only time I saw any "rehab" in a hospital was a larger one than our local one. And all they did was show Mom how to use a walker the day of discharge. She was in bed the whole time there.

This is a question for the DON. Drs are usually not around to ask questions. Is Dad getting any PT, OT while there? Can you bring someone in? I will be surprised if they say yes. Hospitals don't usually allow agencys that do not have privileges to come in. They have to pay for those privileges. Then there is... will Medicare cover it.

Robin2023, welcome to the forum. As for hiring your own physical therapist, I doubt that any hospital would allow someone who was not their own employee. There would be too many liability risks involved.

As the other writers had mentioned, curious why the hospital isn't using their own physical therapist? Could it be that your Dad is refusing their sessions?

Hospitals have PT. Time to talk with the MD about why your Dad isn't seeing PT in the hospital. That is in fact unusual and I think there must be some reason for it. Usually PT and OT consults are the first things that happen.

Has a physical therapist not been in to see him in the hospital?

Have you spoken to the hospitalist about ordering PT?
