She barely runs the A/C because it costs too much. She only buys food when she has some money left over. She will be out of her 401K savings at the end of the year. We have no idea how she plans to survive.

Find Care & Housing
Move somewhere cheaper?

Especially if she owns a home in CA.

If she owns a home, sell it, If she is renting find a less expensive place. Or perhaps she can find a roommate.

The average SS in 2024 is $1,900 so she is getting way more to live on, she should be able to find somewhere else to live.

Here in Florida she would not qualify for section 8 housing as she makes too much money, perhaps she would in Ca, I would check into it.

I know that the cost of living in California is probably higher than anywhere else in the US, so $3000 probably(sadly) doesn't get her far.
She may have to sell her home if she owns one and move into section 8 housing, if she would qualify. She can also if her income qualifies go to different food and clothing banks where she will get free food and clothing. Some also will help with electric bills and the like.
Perhaps it best that she moves to a different less expensive state. In my state of NC, with $3000/month she could live quite comfortably, and keep her air conditioning running and not have to worry.
One of our forum members AlvaDeer lives in CA, so she may know best what is available for this person. Hopefully she will respond.

If you are speaking of care facility, she will have to go on Medi-cal. California is one of the most liberal states in the union, one of the few with only a 2 1/2 year lookback on gifting and one that allows you to keep assets of home, car and almost 100,000 and still get the help of medi-cal (Medicaid).

You may be asking how a senior lives on 3,000 a month in our state. I don't honestly think it is possible in most areas without renting just a room, having a roommate, or doing shared housing.

I wish you the best. Her SS check will be going to the care facility, and she will still require the help of governmental funds. A very expensive state to live in.
