Does anyone have any resources that would help with meal planning for mixed needs? Adult parent is sharing one daily meal with family members. Family members need healthy diet that is somewhat incompatible with the parent’s needs. She does not eat well unless the food is to her taste (meat, carbs), preferred foods (German tastes), tender meat (dental issues), rich (for us to get calories into her), and serious diverticulitis issues. Eating together let’s us monitor/encourage food intake, but we want to eat healthy too.

In this situation I would cook ahead on Sunday and makes largish quantities of what patient needs to eat. Freeze into portions and serve her the meal. If she'd like some of what rest of family is having too, so much the better!

I don't think you have to give up healthy eating to accommodate her, after all in the nursing home/assisted living they make the same basic meals for everyone and then modify as needed. If you give us some idea of what kind of meals you are trying to make I could maybe give you some specific examples.

My grandma is on a soft food diet. I try to serve her what we are having for dinner. It doesn't always work. 1) I blend what I think she will have problems chewing to make it soft. I will blend the chicken in rice or mashed potatoes. 2) make a side or a protien just for her. Example same sides as the family but fish vs steak. 3) sometimes she just gets a completely different dish all together. Good luck

My mom always ate with us (she eats very little now). I just cook our meal... Then I add things to hers to make is more calorie rich... Heavy cream to oatmeal, honey, syrup, butter, full fat cottage cheese, Greek yogurt... Anything that works. You can pull for out early then add spice to rest....or cook hers a bit longer.
