My Mom lives in an elderly high rise, and I have a caregiver coming in for a few hours each day. Is it OK if I give the caregiver permission to fill my Mom's 7 day pill container, so she knows what to take when no one is there?
That would totally be up to you whether you trust the caregiver do this. But understand this, if medicine winds up missing for whatever reason - the caregiver will be the first person suspected. If your mom takes pain or anxiety meds, I strongly suggest you NOT let the caregiver do it. She may be the greatest caregiver in the world, but would be tempted to not give them to your mom and take them for herself or her friends. It has happened a lot around the world. Just something to think about. If you're worried that your mom's caregiver needs to "know" what kind of medicine she is taking for emergency reasons, you can do what I did - type up a list of the name of the medicines, amounts, time they are to be taken, and what it is for - and leave it on the refrigerator or kitchen table. This also helps if there is a reason to call for an ambulance when you're not around so the EMTs would know what medicine she is taking and they will pass it on to the ER for her treatment. Good luck!!
I have set up meds for many of my charges.... it is after the family has asked me to. If you trust the caregiver.... it is your option..... and since I am in the home for many hours... I have never been tempted to steal any medications or anything else for that matter... yes, it's a legitimate concern, but at the same time... if the caregiver was going to steal drugs, she would have already... assuming the drugs are on-site..... hope this helps you... it would be one less thing for you to do.... sending you hugs for a favorable outcome for all involved.
A Big 'Thank You' to both vw9729 & ladee !! Some agency I once had said it was against HIPPA Laws - which totally blew my mind ! HIPPA Laws are for PRIVACY, correct ? I know I signed enough papers in Doctor's Offices for myself.
Actually, I am from Canada and I use to work for a home care agency and by law we were not allowed to give our clients ANY meds not even an aspirin. we could put them on a table and they would have to reach for the pills themselves. You didn't say whether the caregiver you have was through an agency or not but if she is I would check with the agency first and find out their rules on medications.
