Mother 93 with dementia wants to die. She is always crying and asking why God doesn't take her. She wants to be with her mother and sisters, all deceased. Last night, she said she wanted to talk with me. She told me to get a knife and stab her and if I didn't want to do it, she will do it herself. I told her that I would never do such a thing. So she said I should buy poison and put in in her food. I told her that I would not do that either. I know she is talking out of her head and I know for sure that she is not capable of doing such things, but she seems to have a plan.

Get her some psychiatric help. This isn't unusual. My daddy (as he was dying from Parkinson's) begged me to help him end his life. I couldn't--but once he was in hospice and on unlimited morphine, you better believe I gave him all he wanted.

A geriatric psych check up may help--and a physical. Is she in pain? Is she just "done"? We think of our parents as these people who will always be there, but depression that seems to come with painful aging is so trying.

Keep her safe, but get her some help, ASAP. You can simply take her to the ER if she is talking this way and she'd likely be admitted on a 72 hour hold, and that may help you get the ball rolling.

The dementia doesn't make things any easier. I'm very sorry for you AND for your mom. Aging is awful. I'm only 60 and everything hurts!!

Good luck, and come back for support, OK?

Thank you Midkid58. She isn't in any pain. I think she is just "done." We have a doctor's appointment very soon, I am definitely going to talk to him about this. By the way, I am 67 and every morning there is a new pain.
