I help care for an 88yr old friend I stay with her 3 nights a week and she is not eating. Her daughter got her to eat 1/2 pudding today that's it. She will only drink water. She sleeps very little and I'm afraid for her. She is aware of what I say and responds. What might we do to get her to eat?

The hospice nurse needs to be called immediately. If she’s actively dying, she doesn’t need to eat, has lost her appreciate and should not be coerced to eat. Just because she can chew and swallow it doesn’t mean she should. Her body is shutting down and cannot digest food. Food will sit in her stomach undigested and it will just cause her discomfort. Hospice should be explaining this to whoever is in charge right now, if this is in deed where she’s at. I’m very sorry.
