DH has told his brother when they were out for their weekly lunch that he's ready to go o another cruise. We've been on many cruises over the years and the last one was about a year ago. I think he's in stage 5/6 except he's not incontinent but needs help to find the bathroom especially during the night. He gets 'lost' in the house with finding different rooms and I thought that with only the bedroom and bathroom in our cabin, it might be easier for him to get around. I would be at his side all the time, just as at home so I'm not afraid of him wandering off on his own. We'll be going with some family members as we always do, so they can help when needed. He's been talking about this for about three weeks now and I just tell him that we'll wait and see who else is going to go but I wonder if this would be good for him. He's not moody, very sociable but very, very confused and totally dependent on me. If we do decide to go, it would probably be in Feb. or March

Oh yes go!!!! We usually go on a cruise every year, but haven't this year. My mother lives with us now, and we keep trying to get her to go on one. She says that she never had the urge to go. I told her that we could rent her a wheelchair, but there is no coaxing that seems to work. We live less than an hour from the port in Tampa, so there isn't a long car ride. We have used Port Canaveral many times too, but that would be a longer drive for her. If you have someone that wants to go...GO and have all the fun you can!!! Keep us all posted and let us know how it goes!!!

Absolutely go - and as Jeanne suggested, be sure & get the trip insurance - a good one. Sounds like it will be fun, and if he's looking forward to it, why not? It's wonderful that you have other family members who are also going along - you're very lucky to have that additional help!! Have a bahama-mama for me! ;)

Yes, go!

I assume the people you travel with understand his limitations and will be helpful, right?

I travelled with my husband throughout his dementia journey -- cruises, Amtrak, flights. The Grand Canyon, Glacier National Park, Lake Michigan, etc. These trips were not vacations for me, but the change of scenery was welcome.

The last cruise was not so successful because he got sick midway through. But the pleasure he had in looking forward to it and telling people about what he was going to do, and reading the brochures over and over, made it worthwhile anyway.

Do get trip insurance, in case you need to change your plans for medical reasons.

You may be able to swing this if you make certain that he can't slip out of your room while you sleep and that there is someone with him at all times so he doesn't get lost. How does he react to crowds and a lot of commotion? Will he enjoy it or get agitated? So much depends on the individual and his or her caregivers. Since he's looking forward to this, it would be nice if you could go. It could be his last one since his AD is progressive. Only you and his doctor can decide whether this is a good idea. Please keep his doctor in the loop.
Take care,
Carol
