Had to bring mother (96) from home country to live with us. Working full time and trying to care for her. No health insurance or any hope for it ever. With pandemic she never renewed her residency in US. Is there anyone out there with same experience? If so would appreciate some advice as I am becoming more tired and expect the situation to be worse with time. She has severe short term memory loss, severe osteoporosis and mobility issues but takes no chronic medications. Cared for her 25 yrs ago when she had cancer but was mentally and physically able, very different situation.

If she hasn’t renewed her visa, she is technically an illegal alien. Hospitals have sent illegals back when they get stuck with the bill.

Hopefully it doesn’t get to that point. Maybe it just gets to the point where you have to quit or get fired to dedicate 247 to your mom.

We have a poster named "Weary". She brought her Mom from India and is dealing with the problems you probably are. She was able to get her a greencard but is waiting for the 5 year mark where Mom can get Medicaid. In the meantime, she is supporting her Mom and paying for her health insurance.

Is your Mom on a Visa or greencard?

If greencard I just read they are good for 10 yrs before needing to reapply. So Mom would have been here 10 years when it expired meaning after 5 yrs she could have applied for Medicaid. If a Greencard I would call the agency that handles them. COVID effected alot of government offices, hopefully by now they are catching up. See if you can renew. Also ask if the lag in renewing will effect the 10 yrs she was declared a resident. If not, she should be able to get Medicaid.

My mother moved her mother and all her siblings in the 1970s. It was the cultural custom that her son, actually dil, would provide care for life. Well of course this didn’t work out. Even after she qualified for Medicaid, options for home care were scarce. They had to do it or pay for it until they all agreed on a Medicaid home.

foreignmom, at one time Kaiser offered such insurance for those coming from the old country. A friend of mine would get that insurance for her in-laws-laws as they would visit for months at a time, the siblings would all chip in for the cost. I don't know if Kaiser is still doing that as her in-laws had since passed on a few years ago.
