My sister has been in the hospital for 2 months due to very serious cancer and she cannot walk. She has a savings and a home. Her daughters talked to a lawyer and he said they (state) are watching her money? She will probably end up in a home and we don't want her to lose everything. If this is the 2nd email with the same questions, excuse the error, I couldn't get in the system.

Find Care & Housing
Deanna, sounds like your sister is on Medicaid, is that correct? Sadly as we start to age and come down with a very serious medical condition, it can be costly. Thank goodness for Medicaid to help with your sister's care, otherwise there would be a lot of out of pocket expenses.

If your sister is on Medicaid [which is different from Medicare], chances are that Medicaid has already placed a lien on her house. Thus, if someone sells the house, the equity would be needed to pay for your sister's care, or used to reimburse Medicaid. Same with the saving accounts. Usually Medicaid limits how much can be in those accounts, and that would have been already discuss with your sister and her daughters. Any extra money needs to be spent on your sister, and no one else.

She is not on medicade just yet. Only medicare & her supplemental insurance. But once if she will be put in the home, pretty much she will lose everything. Thanks for your response.

Deanna, she is not going to "lose everything". Her resources will be spent on her care. She can retain her home while on Medicaid if others can pay taxes, insurance and upkeep. But yes, Medicaid will put a lien on it.

I think what you are saying is that her children will not inherit her savings.
