I am not sure about you undergarment question, but consider having everyone write down what you family member is eating and drinking throughout the day to identify possible diarrhea triggers.

I do not know what product can be used to contain it more effectively. However, if you have worked with your GI doc or PCP and have a diagnosis that allows it, immodium is great. My dad cannot always take that, but he is allowed a prescribed med called Cholestyramine  oral suspension 4mg packets. It is a stool thickener and returns his watery stools (that are less controllable day and night), to a more solid and controllable situation. Hope this helps!

I have a chronic partial small bowel obstruction and often have overflow diarrhea at night. The best product I’ve found is GoodNites. They’re meant for young girls (and boys), but the XXL size fits up to 165 lbs. They fit more snugly than adult diapers, which helps contain any leaks more effectively. They’re also more comfortable. Sorry you and your mom are dealing with this!

Hi there so firstly sort your doctor incase you have any issues causing diarrhoea
That can make a body dehydrated. Causing other issues so speak to your doctor first
On the coping side fur my dad we use high level incontinence pants
Disposable if ur funds allow and inside that an incontinence pad
They come on different incontinence levels depending on your flow
dad rarely ever leaks with those even at night
Best to speak to your doctor first tho
of somethings wrong causing that getting it treated will reduce your stress levels

I give my mother (98) Metamucil every am to help keep her bowls consistent.
When I have to work and she forgets ( dementia) I hear from her.
I'm not sure if this helps but good luck. 💚

My mother in law has bowel incontinence, we use the Walmart brand Assurance, and it's specifically for incontinence, though it prevents her soiling her clothes and my furniture, she still has to clean herself up. But they seem to do the trick.

I'd like to first point out that the OP (or their loved one) may have a diagnosis and be working with a doctor. I don't know why so many people assume she/LO doesn't know what's causing the problem. We're not here to be amateur doctors.

Susan asked for a recommendation for a product that will help contain nighttime diarrhea. She did not go into details on whether it was explosive or watery or anything. So let's try to help her out with this particular question. What's a good product to keep the yuck contained? I did see someone advised on other ways to do that, which looked helpful.

As a person with chronic illnesses that can cause this, I haven't yet found a good answer for a product, and I would be interested to know, too.

Susan, you have my empathy. This is a no-fun issue to have to deal with, and I'm sorry it's something you or your loved one has to deal with.

Thank you, I truly appreciate your post. Some of the replies that I receive(SMH)!! My mother was diagnosed with severe Alzheimer’s. She recently has had a horrible bout of diarrhea and fever. Of course I’ve taken her to the doctor. Thank you for answering my question. God bless.

Nocturnal reoccuring explosive watery diarrhea in elderly women can be Microscopic Colitis. The problem is that to get a diagnosis you have to do a colonoscopy with biopsies. Many times this is too hard on bedbound residents.

The treatment after a firm diagnosis is entocort-a steroid. I found this to be a rough drug as a 50 year old female.

OTC management things you can try would be 1/2 immodium pill daily, possibly up to 3/4 or 1 immodium daily (START WITH LOW DOSE) 1/2 immodium pill should be effective daily.

Another thing to try is 2-4 pepto bismol tablets a day.

Use either the immodium OR the pepto for daily maintenance.

The immodium or pepto will not heal the gut. Stay on these for a maintenance dose to make BM's manageable.

The only solution that helped us was to try to contain it better to make clean up somewhat easier. Wearing a pair of shorts style boxer shorts (the kind with snug legs) over the top allowed us to get to the bathroom and into the shower without leaving a trail all the way, tucking pants into the socks adds another layer of protection. I also found that using a wet/dry shop vac or Bissell's little green machine worked very well to clean up any spills.

My mom had this problem on and off for YEARS. It was worse over the past two years and really affecting her quality of life. Her PCP started her on a once daily Imodium and as well as very high fiber gummies and it finally put the explosive and very messy accidents to bed.

Brandee again

Is this every night and watery? It could be Microscopic Colitis. If it is every night and watery I'd see a doctor.

Switch to simple diet: chicken, rice, overcooked veggies. Avoid processed foods. Avoid fried foods. Avoid foods with ingredient lists.

Talk to doctor about discontinueing any meds that cause diarrhea. Many do.

I don't know of any adult diaper that won't leak when there's diarrhea in them, so instead I would try to figure out what is causing the diarrhea and find ways to stop it. Perhaps a visit to the doctor is what's needed here to get answers as to what exactly is going on to cause the diarrhea.
