So when one is accepted by Medicaid for LT care do you still have your social security check available to use for personal use or does that all roll over into Medicaid to help with the expense? Just asking as we will need some of her income to pay funeral costs and if they recover her income trying to see how I can remove funeral funds before accepting Medicaid.

From the date of her Medicaid application, she is to do a copay or SOC (share of cost, in Medicaid speak) of all her monthly income- like her SS, any retirement, annuity in payouts- to the facility. All she will have is her PNA. PNA varies from $35 - $110 depending on your state. For my mom in TX it was $60. That’s it and realistically it covers their beauty shoppe or barber appointments during the month and maybe some toiletries.

She probably won’t get to keep her social security check. Usually the social security check will go the LTC facility, and Medicaid covers what the S.S. check does not. She’ll probably get $35 a month for personal expenses.$35 might be wrong, but I know in my state they allow $35 for personal expenses. Be careful removing her funds before you accept Medicaid, it could affect her eligibility.

If she hasn't applied for Medicaid yet, some of the money can be used for a prepaid burial (but not full funeral costs)

Once on Medicaid SS and pensions go for her care. Like said she gets a Personal Needs Allowance (PNA) only. She is allowed a house but it will have to be upkeeped by someone else or sold. None of her money can be used for this purpose.
