He is at the VA State Home & has more bad days than good ones. He's got worse almost as soon as I moved him from the NH to VA. 8 day hospital revealed vascular blockages & was not candidate for surgery to find blkgs. Surgeon also suggested gangrene starting or already in his toes not toe nail fungus. Gangrene smells like almonds not a bad smell as would think. He was sent to hosp. for celulites (inflamation from wound on left foot) which is still being treated & looks better but he has not walked on those feet in a month or more. Hospital could administer drip with lq. antibiotics. Now is having bad days sleeping doesn't want to eat makes no sense seems to be in a great deal of pain the doctor removed some meds. ordered pain med as needed (he can't tell them if he hurts) he can't recognize the nurse button & doesn't know what its for. They see him about 2 hr intervals. so all I think is going on is..they are preparing him as well as my Mom & me for his death. So does he qualify for hospice should I ask the doctor for that so I can make these days left the best for him. Hospice sounds like more 1 on 1 & I do see that as what he probably needs. we visit almost every day but we are really getting tired & running out of juice ourselves. Mom is 87 & Dad is 89 & I am 64. I just need divine guidance. Thanks for listening.

Your right..today met with hospice rep. & that is what they said Ativan & low dose lq. morphine unless you request another form of med for pain. Reduce the amount of other meds as well. His kidneys are shutting down. Overnight had some slight blood in stool so didn't give the coumadin either. He drank lemonaide & water for me. Drank chicken noodle soup I pureed for him. He ate some pumpkin with brown sugar & cinnamon I pureed also. I had to moisten his lips & give a little water before he would eat. He is sick, really tired, has ALZ., supposed to use C-Pap machine at night (right now he is not asking for it but the nurse, in conversatation about my Dad's condition made a point of pointing out after we talked to the hospice rep. that he uses it every night.) But he won't eat or drink for them. I guess he was so tired after eating & drinking for me he asked me to let him rest.So we stayed for awhile longer & left so we could call the family to advise of situation.

Hospice kills their patients by giving them Ativan & morphine until they go into a coma from not eating then they pass. I have read countless stories like mine even on this site. Hospice did that to my dad until my husband and I came to the rescue. We told them not to give him pain meds. He wasn't in pain. I'm so outraged by hospice. Don't go there no matter what!

I'm so sorry. Call hospice, they can send someone out. Hospice will be able to keep him as comfortable as possible and they have trained staff that can help you and your mom through this difficult time.

Just make sure that the hospice you use is VA approved. We had another person on here who had to use the hospice company that the VA approved for their father who was in a VA facility.

You can call a hospice company yourself and they'll come out to assess your dad. It sounds like he'd be a candidate for hospice.

I agree with Freqflyer - ask the doctor if it's time to bring in hospice. They doctor has to believe that your dad has six months or less to live. I am also sorry that you're going through this - it's tough for all of you.

So sorry you and your Mom are going through this. The doctors decide when it is time for Hospice, but it wouldn't hurt to ask them what they think. It is good that you are thinking ahead about his comfort.
